  • NGF History - 75 Years of the Golf Business

To celebrate the National Golf Foundation's 75th birthday, we created a film to document the evolution of the golf business since the NGF was established in 1936. NGF founders Herb and Joe Graffis had a profound impact on many aspects of the golf industry since they started publishing Chicago Golfer magazine and then two of the most important early national golf magazines: Golfdom and Golfing. Herb was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1977 for his various contributions to the golf business. This film covers the history of the golf industry in three acts. 1936-1959 covers the post-depression and war years, including the transition from golf's origins as solely a private club game to one for the masses. 1960-1986 focuses on golf's broad expansion fueled by golf-obsessed Eisenhower, architect Robert Trent Jones, Arnold Palmer and golf's exposure on television. 1987-2011 explores how golf went mainstream, became an aspirational lifestyle and evolved into big business boosted by investment capital, real estate entrepreneurs, innovations in equipment and course conditioning and the explosion of the modern professional game including Tiger Woods, the PGA TOUR and 24/7/365 coverage on Golf Channel. This video was presented for the first time on April 28th, 2011 to 120 golf industry leaders at the NGF Golf Business Symposium. Watch Video
